The lie detector pens don't do a special dance when a person lies. The examiner scores the test by comparing physiological responses (breathing, blood pressure, heart, and perspiration rates) to these probable-lie control questions with reactions to relevant questions such as, "Did you ever use an illegal drug?" (commonly asked in pre-employment screening). If the former reactions are greater, the examinee is safe; if the latter are greater, he fails. If responses to both "control" and relevant questions are about the same, the result is deemed inconclusive.
Taking this truth test is like playing Russian roulette. People have blown their whole careers, because they thought that the polygraph would protect them if they told the truth. Once you fail one examination then you are pretty much black balled in that state, if you are applying to become a cop. People can fail a lie detector for a number of reasons such as heart problems, surprise, nervousness, etc... Don't trust your whole career to a mahine that has been proven to NOT work.
